Under general supervision of the administrative manager and charge nurse, we are seeking a Certified Medical Assistant who will perform clinical activities necessary for the smooth flow of patients. The assistant will perform a variety of duties to assist in the care and safety of the patients through the Medical Oncology suite at Green Spring Station. Specific Duties & Responsibilities Prepare patients for physicians, chemotherapy, nurse visits by taking vital signs, height, weight, and obtain medication list, assess the need for and perform orthostatic vital signs, enter data into Epic. Assist patients to exam room and prepare them for exam/diagnostic procedures. Obtain blood samples. Process samples in Epic. Label all specimens and forward to appropriate laboratory. (Skills must be signed off by nurse manager.) Converts peripheral IVs to heplocks and visa versa. Access ports for treatment and/or blood samples. (Skills will be signed off by nurse manager) Initiates IV fluids for chemotherapy. Assist with adverse drug reactions. Keep exam rooms neat and organized. Change table paper and prepare needed supplies between patients. Responsible for changing linens in treatment room as needed. Maintains aseptic technique. Assist in preparation, maintenance and pre-visit auditing of medical records. Responsible for maintenance of inventory of clinical and paper supplies and linen in exam/consult rooms and in treatment area. Determine when items are needed, following established par level system. Receive items ordered. Open boxes and restock supply rooms, exam/consult rooms and treatment area. Assist physician with procedures, as required. Chaperone exams if needed. Observe and reports conditions of IV sites, including central catheters. Perform dressing changes on all catheters. Order x-rays, outside films, lab results and reports as needed. Perform skilled tasks such as venipuncture and starting IVs. (Skills must be signed off by Charge/senior clinical nurse.) Assist patients with transfer to/from wheelchairs, stretchers, etc. Requests for prescription refills through Epic system, taking/relaying telephone messages, direct patient flow and run errands. Ensure proper disposal of potentially infectious waste. Troubleshoot infusion pumps. Check and record for malfunctioning medical equipment, daily. Participate in skill development. Scan documents in Epic. Perform copying and faxing. Cross train in registration and scheduling activities. Substitute if needed. Directs and assist very ill patients to the treatment area. Function as part of the collaborative practice group. Gather teaching materials and constructs educational packets. Administer medication, subcutaneous and intramuscular, with direct supervisor from a clinical nurse. (Must be signed of my medical director.) Scan all outside ancillary reports into Epic. Audit the documents to ensure proper internal delivery to Epic. Physical Demands Speak in a clear, pleasant, and understandable manner via telephone and/or in person. Manually operate a personal computer and use complex software to access and manually input data. Lift charts, files and boxes weighing up to 30 pounds. Walk and or stand up to five hours a day. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications High School diploma or graduation equivalent. Experience using EPIC preferred. Certification/Registration as a Medical Assistant (e.g. CMA, AAMA, RMA, AMT, NAHP)required. If not currently certified/registered, must become certified/ registered within 180 days (6 months) of date of hire. Exam fees will be paid by the department. If a retest is required, associated fees are paid by the employee. Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association or the American Red Cross required. Must maintain MA and CPR certification/registration during duration of employment in this position.
