DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS The primary purpose of this position is to serve as a Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) of the new clinic initiative for Clinical Services, which provides services for young adults and linkage to behavioral health services, Smart Girls and Wise Guys. The CMA duties include customer service, management support, measuring and recording vital signs, recording patient interview, history, and chief complaint, patient education, preparing for exams, cleaning exam rooms, assisting Physician Extender, phlebotomy and collection of other lab specimens, preparing and administering medications with physician’s authorizations, first aid procedures, CPR, maintain supplies and equipment, disposing of biohazard wasted according to OSHA standards, and accurate, legal and ethical documentation at all times. Examples of Duties Essential Duties and Tasks Obtain weight, height, B/P, vital signs. Interview clients obtaining history and chief complaint. Assist the medical provider with providing young adult health clinical services. Review chart prior to exam to determine preparation for exam. Appropriately prepare the exam room, necessary supplies and clients prior to exam. Remain in the exam room handing needed supplies if appropriate. Adhere to OSHA standards at all times. Clean rooms and equipment between clients, after clinic and weekly as assigned. Complete any additional duties as assigned by supervisor. Obtain specimens by phlebotomy or other methods, labeling specimens, preparing specimens for transport to the lab, and retrieving lab reports in a timely manner. Provide immunizations following ACIP guidelines. Attend clinic team meetings to share information to improve clinic flow and to problem solve. Complete time, travel, telephone and leave slips as required. Clean equipment and sterilize instruments as assigned. Order supplies for the clinic and keep up with the inventory. Assist with statistical data entry. RECRUITMENT STANDARDS Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of applicable supportive mechanical acts and/or sanitation and personal hygiene. Basic knowledge of the social, economic, and environmental conditions of clients to be served. Ability to establish rapport and relate to population served and a variety of service disciplines (nurse, doctor, social worker). Ability to follow written instructions. Ability to do basic interviews for sports/school physicals and sexual health screenings. Ability to document in an electronic medical record. Ability to recognize basic orders and lab requests to accurately fill out forms and transport specimens. Ability to perform venipuncture, in a safe manner, and collect other specimens as ordered. Ability to access the NC Immunization Registry to assess vaccine needs and record vaccines given. Ability to gather data and apply to an excel spreadsheet. Typical Qualifications Minimum Qualifications: Associates Degree of Applied Science from a CAAHEP-accredited college program. Preferred Qualifications: Looking for CMA that has worked in busy primary care or OB/GYN practices or clinics. Strong phlebotomy skills and lab collection procedures. Necessary Special Qualification: Must have obtained CMA certification from the Certifying Board of the American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA). Supplemental Information Physical Demands and Work Conditions Sits, walks, and stands during a workday. Must be able to physically perform the basic life support functions of walking, fingering, grasping, talking, hearing and repetitive motions, as well as to periodically carry supplies. Must have the visual acuity to record observations and physical assessments of clients, and to read and record documentation for medical records. Hazardous conditions include possible blood and body fluid exposure/exposure to infections, and contact with difficult clients and/or family members. May Require Driving This position may require driving for this position whether driving a County owned or personal vehicle to conduct county business such as but not limited to attending conferences, meetings, or any other county related functions. Motor Vehicle Reports may be verified for valid driver’s license and that the driving record is compatible with the county’s driving criteria. If a personal vehicle is operated for county business proper insurance is maintained as per Guilford County’s vehicle use policy.
